Katrina Pallon’s upcoming exhibition, “Overture for Spring”, draws viewers into an indulgent land that embodies the festive spirit of the Lunar New Year, in a collection where the artist plays with elements of traditional Chinese paintings and infuses them with her own style. The works showcase lush, stylized floral designs complemented with elements that reveal Pallon’s strong grasp of the aesthetic nuances peculiar to Chinese culture, embodied by dragons, bold lanterns and peonies. Considered powerful symbols of new opportunities and resilience in the face of challenge, colourful species of birds can also be seen across the pieces such as blue jays, hornbills, and peacocks, the latter regarded as a manifestation of a celestial phoenix on earth.
Pieces featuring shades of crimson are contrasted with a triptych of pearl hues and cool blue tones paying homage to porcelain wares, a design representative of the dynasties of trade that further
coloured the Chinese people’s rich history. Chinese women are also represented with the folds of their hanfu transforming into landscapes, while other pieces celebrate an all-female group of dragon dancers. As distinctive of her works, Pallon’s women are once again elevated into mystical goddesses, evoking a sense of timelessness. The women reign supreme in their kingdom, harbingers
of fortune for the days ahead.
