Paraphernalia is Jon Chan’s first solo exhibition. A painting teacher at LASALLE College of the Arts and in practice for more than a decade, Chan is, in this sense, overdue for the focus of a solo presentation.
Chan’s new oil paintings explores the dimensions between unsolicited real-time performances and their mediation and circulation as images, attenuating any parallels between these two domains. The title Paraphernalia refers to the array of images found in online and print media circulation, and how this inundation are both secondary as well as necessary to our everyday experiences.
Chan paints in order to disorder everyday vicissitudes. His subjects range from banal to frightening encounters, some derived from found media images, others from orchestrated scenes.
