In August, Gajah Gallery will be hosting an online showcase of new works by Singapore-based artist, Koh Kai Ting, inspired by her recent residency at Pulau Ketam, Malaysia. Koh’s practice creates visual narratives that explore the conflict between individual happiness and the expectations of society, questioning how much of one’s happiness is under personal control. Juxtaposing these gratified emotions with bondage and animals as metaphors for human desire, her paintings highlight the destructive instinct as part of the unconscious structures of pleasure, hence gaining pleasure through pain.
