Born in Singapore in 1946, Yong Cheong Thye is an acclaimed artist who specialises in both traditional and contemporary Chinese calligraphy. His talent in art was discovered early in childhood and shortly after graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1966, Yong went on to expand his profound interest in Chinese calligraphy under the renowned calligrapher, Mr. Tsue Ta Ti. Having won top prizes in nationwide competitions for Chinese calligraphy and with decades of experience under his belt, Yong stands today as a Master Calligrapher with an international status. His works have travelled to various countries around the world including Canada, China, Switzerland, France, New Zealand, Nepal, among many others. Currently, he is also the official spokesperson for the Chinese Calligraphy Society of Singapore, the Vice-Chairman of the Federation of Art Societies, and the Vice-Chairman of the Shicheng Calligraphy & Seal Carving Society.
Yong’s well-built foundation in Chinese calligraphy is the basis for his inventiveness in pushing forward this ancient art form. His competency in the different scripts of Chinese calligraphy, like the oracle script and the cursive script, allows him to boldly experiment and bring out their distinctive yet complementary differences at the same time. In this exhibition, Yong would also be exhibiting woodcarvings of his calligraphy, proving that the joy and spontaneity of ink calligraphy can also be expressed via other mediums under his deft and capable hands. This enlightening visual experience is not to be missed as Yong shows how an ancient art is rejuvenated through creativity, while still retaining its aesthetic tradition that it has come to be appreciated for.
