Jayson Cortez, Dream Catcher, 2015, Oil on canvas, 78.74 cm x 114.3 cm
Filipino artist, Jayson Cortez, inaugurates One East Asia’s new artspace with his first ever solo exhibition in Singapore.
Portal explores the innocence, ephemerality, and world of make-believe that only childhood can offer. Inspired by his younger sister, Cortez captures the essence of childhood through his fantastical compositions by utilising an unconventional technique in which he layers one existing painting over another. The exhibit is a departure from the artist’s older, more austere works yet his hyperrealist tendencies remain apparent and are flawlessly intertwined with surrealist elements. This unique interweaving of styles is palpable in Time Travel, a respectful homage to pioneer surrealist Salvador Dali. Portal is a unique, emotional exploration about the potency of a child’s mind and its powers to unlock infinite realities.
Opening Reception: 9 June 2015, 6.30pm-9pm, One East Asia ARTSpace
The Artist will conduct a walk-through and talk at 6.30 pm in conjunction with this exhibition.
