“Presenting Pastness” is a solo exhibition by Zoya Chaudhary that features a new body of delicately-crafted cutout works, alongside an installation of crowdsourced images that capture the collective pandemic experience in Singapore.
Chaudhary reflected on how during the lockdown, things that typically mark our days vanished and time took on a flat, seamless quality. In turn, giving shape to time and creating movement in our static physical lives became a conscious endeavour. The cut-out works in the exhibition make use of media and memories from this period to reflect on the passing of time.
Using a combination of hand cutting, laser cutting, burning, scratching and painting the surface of newspapers, Chaudhary uses art as a means to negotiate her emotions. Exploring her personal filters and the thinking about ruins, she draws inspiration from latticed jali screens, an architectural feature from India, as well as cut-out geometric shapes, through which the perception of the real and recorded may be filtered or fragmented.
