Primordial Patterns by Raymond Yap

Primordial Patterns is veteran Malaysian artist Raymond Yap’s first solo exhibition with Art Porters Gallery. Raymond is currently a full-time lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

Our pattern-seeking behaviours are fundamental to who we are as humans. This search is not to discover the familiar, but to identify the part of the pattern that is out of arrangement in the design. It is discovery and experimentation with the unfamiliar that has led us to invent and evolve.

The multi-layered approach Raymond takes to painting is inspired primarily by patterns found in nature, in which he adds and subtracts negative and positive forms derived from landscapes and images to manually generate an expansive body of evolving compositions.

Primordial Patterns celebrates the innate potential of the human subconscious mind, emphasising the importance of our creativity as we approach a future where the procedurally generative capabilities of artificial intelligence may threaten cognition.
