Printed Matter Workshops Organised by Facebook Analog Research Lab

The Facebook Analog Research Lab is a creative space for design and art-making. Its primary goal is to create and direct projects that influence culture and challenge thought. Our mediums of choice favor the analog without neglecting the digital. We ask questions and we build things. Then we ask questions about the things we built. Hopefully somewhere along the way you start asking questions and building things too. It’s this cycle of creation, reflection, education, and provocation that drives our work.

Drop by for daily risograph demos and create something unique with our team. We’ll also be presenting live workshops with various local creatives on each day of the fair. All workshops are FREE and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Don’t miss out!

Friday, June 28
BOOK BINDING with DARIUS OU
Session One: 1–2PM // Session Two: 3–4PM
Create your own zine with the option of saddle stitching or staple binding. Darius will demonstrate ways to create various effects with paper textures and xerox scans. Advanced methods include expanding your zine in format and size, uncut pages and fold cover and so on. Participants can transform them into notebooks or graphic books with a custom book-binding cradle he recently developed.

Saturday, June 29
RISOGRAPH COLLAGE with MESSYMSXI (Tan Zi Xi)
Session One: 1–2PM // Session Two: 3–4PM
In this workshop, participants will work with illustrator, MessyMsxi to create a paper collage with risograph printed patterns based on cities and nature, building on themes of natural and man-made synthesis in her recent work. During the process, discover the versatility of risograph printing and paper cutting. Learn how to use varying methods of contrast and play to make your collage stand out.

Sunday, June 30
ZINE MAKING with MRYDETTE (Mary Bernadette Lee)
Session One: 1–2PM // Session Two: 3–4PM
This workshop invites participants to take selected pages copied from a classic novel as a starting point to build a zine about their personal journeys. Learn how to combine collage, illustration, and writing to weave together a simple narrative. Mrydette will share methods for storytelling through words and pictures in this collaborative journey towards understanding the self.

Daily: 2:30–3PM
RISOGRAPH INTRODUCTION
The Risograph is a great way to make posters, flyers, zines and more. In this workshop we will learn about the what the Riso actually is, its working parts, advantages, limitations, best uses and practices. We will cover how to: scan in your hand made artwork and set up artwork files for digital transfer, load and change color drums and print off a two color poster which you can take with you at the end of the session.

Daily: 3:30–6PM
MAKE & CREATE / EXPERIMENT with DARIUS OU
Our current Designer in Residence (DIR), Darius will lead a collaborative, hands-on design activity where participants can create posters based on preset elements such as text, background pattern and supporting graphics. These handmade collages are collated and printed with the Risograph digital duplicator at the end of each day, and the creative result will be presented in newsprint format to be shared with visitors at the fair.
