OUTLINE
Participants will learn the process of relief print, which is created by hand carving on a flat plank of wood, eliminating areas intended to be untouched by ink by carving away with gouges, chisels and knives. A roller holding a film of ink is then rolled completely over the block and paper is laid over the block, thus creating an imprint – Imagine a rubber stamp! The carved blocks allow multiple printings (called editions) with different variation such as colours, surfaces, etc. to achieve unique results.
ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
Zhang Fuming is trained in the discipline of Printmaking and works with mediums largely of traditional origin. Favouring the direct and physical nature of printing mediums, it allows him to focus on the creation of imagery as an uninterrupted, direct means of communication with his audience. Harnessing the direct, efficient means of black-white narratives in expressing critical social messages, he create works reprising the role of social realism. Website: https://www.fumingzhang.com/
