PULAU SEBAKAU by Green Zeng explores tropics of identity, history, absence and displacement through a postcard installation. Presented under Art Outreach’s [ Hearth ] programme, the exhibition features PB, a character exiled to Pulau Sebakau, a fictional island south of Singapore.
During the 1960s-1970s, Singapore’s offshore islands experienced rapid depopulation due to the nation’s socio-economic needs. Mirroring it, the fictional island faced progress leading to the resettlement of its inhabitants to the mainland. While living on the island, PB interacts with indigenous fishing communities, sharing his reflections through postcards with his wife. This narrative captures the island’s landscape and the lives of its inhabitants, presenting a poignant portrayal of a community grappling with leaving their home.
