‘Racines’ or ‘Roots’ is a solo exhibition by French-Vietnamese Artist, Hom Nguyen. The collection of twenty artworks explore his unique and distinctive perspective on life and further strengthens Miaja’s mission to strengthen the cultural link between the gallery’s native Europe and its adoptive Asia with cross-cultural themed Art.
Hom Nguyen’s body of work is inspired by a difficult childhood and his personal life journey. His mother, who was from a disadvantaged background in Vietnam, moved to France on a boat. Hom was raised in Paris by a single mother on the streets and was always in search of his ethnic roots and a place to call home. ‘Racines’ is an introspection of himself and his ongoing quest to make peace with his cultural identity and sense of belonging as an Asian immigrant in Europe.
A self-taught artist, he is known for his larger-than-life portraits which capture the complexity of human emotion. He explores the essence of our deepest feelings through a combination of free-flowing lines. His evocative works depict multi-ethnic faces seemingly born out of chaos; a combination of lines and colours that result in a touching insight into the human soul.
