Ritual · In Progress – Solo Exhibition by Lim Soo Ngee

iPRECIATION proudly presents a solo exhibition by Singapore artist Lim Soo Ngee 林序毅 titled Ritual · In Progress「儀式 · 進行中」. The exhibition will feature three series of sculptures and a series of prints. For the sculpture series We, The People (2018), Lim used a traditional charring method for the first time to create the carved wood sculptures’ unique deep-set texture and to preserve them. One (2018) fulfills Lim’s long-time dream to present 100 sculptures in an installation. Five prints will be unveiled, with two of the prints taking reference from his earlier work Man with Bird (2015), a teak sculpture featuring a myna perched on a man’s shoulders. The figures in these works appear in simple clothing, giving a sense of familiarity in everyday life that Lim finds comfort in.

In his latest works, he conveys the idea that life is guided either consciously or unconsciously through rituals. Lim often reflects on the human condition and the essentials of human existence such as life, death and growth. By relating his urban life experiences back to nature, he expresses his ideas of relations between humanity, the environment and society.

Lim Soo Ngee (b. 1962, Singapore) is currently a senior lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Singapore). He earned a Diploma in Fine Art (Sculpture) from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1989 before continuing to pursue a Master of Fine Arts (Sculpture) from Edinburgh College of Art in 1997. Lim has represented Singapore in numerous exhibitions both locally and internationally, and is a regular contributor to many international sculpture symposiums, such as the inaugural International Woodcarving Symposium, Singapore (2007), Hong Kong International Sculpture Symposium (2009) and International Sculpture symposium of the 11th Asian Art Festival. In 2016, Lim was selected to participate in ENVISION: Sculptures @ the Garden City organised by iPreciation. In the later part of the year, Lim was selected to participate in the “Singapore Biennale – An Atlas of Mirrors” as a commissioned artist. His works are also in the collection of the National Gallery, Esplanade, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Ngee Ann Kongsi, Asian Sculpture Theme Park (Inner Mongolia, China) and other local and international private collections.

Street art is flourishing in Singapore. So why does it still make some people uneasy?

As murals, busking and other forms of street art become increasingly common in Singapore's public spaces, artists say acceptance has grown to some degree. Yet, they can't shake off the sense that such art remains carefully curated and managed.
