Ruben Pang returned from a recent trip to Los Angeles, California, for his solo exhibition with Chan + Hori Contemporary. Opening 1st December 2017 in a pop-up space at Gillman Barracks, the exhibition will feature an all new line-up of artworks accompanied with a ‘live’ performance of original music composed by the artist and bandmates.
Traveling to “The City of Angels”, Ruben ran the gamut, from fuelling the modern mythology and legend of Los Angeles to quieting in the rocks, cactus and blue sky of the Mojave Desert. Various encounters, including those with subaltern desert communes, decrepit hotels and exposure to colourful and contrasting characters from the city and suburbs propels the thinking behind his new works.
Ruben’s vibrant and ethereal paintings combine fluid technique with a kaleidoscopic palette. Without a preconceived image of the final composition, Ruben’s contact with the artistic process evolves through meditation and methodical thinking, removing the boundary between aesthetical abstraction and representation. A painter who recently added ceramics to his painting repertoire, Ruben’s original and visceral approaches allow images to surface spontaneously. He describes this manner as “visual syncopation, like searching for a melody in white noise”.
