Chan + Hori Contemporary presents our very first online exclusive, titled Screen Dream by Esmond Loh. We unveil 27 new paintings hosted exclusively through Artsy, presenting a new body of work which highlights Esmond’s shift from a representational mode of painting to an abstract one. These paintings convey a sense of depth and space, and reflect the collapsing of time – with multiple timeframes captured in a two-dimensional plane. They draw forth associations to 20th-century Surrealist artists such as Yves Tanguy, who depict dreamlike landscapes with amorphous forms.
“A painting is…first and foremost, an image composed of the elements of art: line, shape, colour, tone, form, texture, space. A painting is all of these things before it is anything else.” – Esmond Loh
Esmond recently won the Highly Commended Award in the Established Artist Category for the UOB Painting of the Year Award this year, and was also the overall UOB Painting of the Year Award Winner in 2012.
