Singapore Art History: from NAFA to NAGA

This talk provides a broad overview of Singaporean Art History from the Pioneer modernists, through the Second Generation artists to the Pioneer Contemporary generation. A wide range of artworks – many of which may be enjoyed in our national collections – will be used to illustrate the developments that took place over a span of almost 100 years.

The session begins with the immigrant pioneer artists, including Liu Kang, Cheong Soo Pieng, Chen Wen Hsi and Georgette Chen who fused Chinese and western modernist sensibilities to create the Nanyang idiom.

Furthermore, it will go on to discuss some of the main Second Generation artists like Thomas Yeo, Anthony Poon and Ng Eng Teng among others, who studied in the west and introduced the abstract language of art to Singapore.

The lecture will conclude by discussing the pioneering contemporary artists like Tang Da Wu, Amanda Heng, Lee Wen, Vincent Leow and Han Sai Por.
