MASTERPIECE Southeast Asia, Chinese, Modern & Contemporary Art Auction

Duck in Marsh by Affandi

This summer, works from the collection of Joseph Borkin will be unveiled and offered on the open market in Singapore for the preview duration of 25th July to 1st August at Global Auction Pte. Ltd under the theme MASTERPIECE Southeast Asia, Chinese, Modern & Contemporary Art.

An American economist, legal scholar, humanist, and educator, Borkin was a key figure in the development of Indonesia during its fledging period in the early 1950s. In his possession is Duck in Marsh, a piece by Indonesian maestro Affandi. Abstracted from the painter’s experiences at visited locations, the work bears his trademark technique of working with paints squeezed directly from the tube and smearing frenzied strokes throughout the canvas with his fingers, earning him the recognition of the world’s next Van Gogh.

Market Scene by Abdul Aziz

Market Scene by Abdul Aziz is yet another masterful work that showcases the painter’s three-dimensional painting style that allows his subjects to step out of the canvas. Adept at anatomically-accurate presentations and detailing effects of light in his paintings, Aziz is able to bring his viewers into the realm that intersects reality and imagination. Enclosed in a wooden teak frame that was crafted by the artist, this piece has remained in the private collection by a German collector and will now be unveiled to the public for the first time ever, thus offering new insights into the techniques and life of the master.

Masterpiece Auction is proud to present these two exceptional pieces alongside other strong collections from Southeast Asia and beyond at the main auction event at Sheraton Towers. Get up-close and personal with the works at the preview exhibition during the days leading up to the auction for a better understanding of why these pieces have been specifically curated as the leading artworks of the 20th century.
