The Singapore Children’s Book Festival 2024 is dedicated to promoting local children’s books, showcasing the talents of Singaporean illustrators and authors. Targeted at children and industry professionals alike, the vibrant Festival includes storytelling, creative art and drama activities for children, and a festival bazaar promoting children’s books and other creative crafts. In addition, authors, illustrators and industry experts from various sectors of the children’s book industry will be participating in various talks on key topics surrounding children’s literature and its local landscape.
For the first time in Singapore, children’s book illustrators will be recognised with the prestigious Illustrator of the Year Award. This landmark accolade aims to nurture and support homegrown illustrators who bring stories to life through their exceptional artwork, playing a crucial role in captivating young readers and fostering their love for literature. The award comes with a significant prize of $10,000, underscoring the value and critical importance of illustration in children’s books. This initiative not only celebrates the artistic contributions of illustrators but also aims to inspire young emerging artists in the field, with the conferment of a Student Illustrator Book Prize to three outstanding students who took part in a student-focused competition. By honouring these artists, it is envisioned that Singapore will take a significant step towards promoting the vibrant world of children’s literature.
To inculcate a love of reading local literature in young children, parents and their children can look forward to fun-filled art and craft activities bringing stories alive. Each workshop features a different book and will be accompanied by storytelling by the author. Highlights include workshop to create a noodle dish of modelling clay as inspired by “Catch Mee If You Can” by Low Lai Chow, a physical theatre workshop as inspired by the multilingual “Just A Little Mynah” by Evelyn Sue Wong, and a comic strip workshop as inspired by “Mist-Bound’ by Daryl Kho.
