Celebrating the 100th anniversary of one of Singapore’s most celebrated artist, the lecture will provide an understanding and overview of the work of Singapore’s pioneer generation of artists that laid the foundations of a Singaporean/Nanyang art tradition.
Beginning with the water colourist Lim Cheng Hoe who emerged from the colonial school system, the lecture will go on discussing the founding of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and the migrant artists who combined the aesthetics of Chinese painting with the sensibilities of the Western Avant Garde to create the Nanyang idiom that came to define early Singaporean Art.
The session includes a walkthrough the exhibition ‘Cheong Soo Pieng 100th Anniversary’ featuring 20 artworks spanning four decades of the artist’s career.
