“One table two chairs” is a staging convention for traditional Chinese Opera, where the stage is positioned in the South, facing the North where the audience sits.
Inspired by this theatre concept, the inaugural edition of Southernmost: 1 Table 2 Chairs Project brings together outstanding and established traditional and contemporary theatre artists from the region, for an intensive intercultural exchange and presentation of ideas.
The line-up includes Javanese dance master Didik Nini Thowok, Kunqu opera master Wang Bin, Cambodian classical dancer Nget Rady, experimental theatre masters Danny Yung and Makoto Sato from Hong Kong and Japan respectively, as well as Singaporean Young Artist Award recipient cum Artistic Director Liu Xiaoyi.
Presented by emerging experimental theatre company Emergency Stairs, this two-week festival consists of a series of masterclasses, talks and public presentations, culminating in a thrilling triple-bill performance on 22 and 23 Dec, Fri & Sat.
