Wong Shih Yaw
Stilts II is a solo exhibition by local artist Wong Shih Yaw that is the sequel to Stilts, the show that launched the artist’s iconic series of the same name. In Stilts II, Wong develops on his initial ideas and produced 12 intricate paintings that embody old and new themes.
Standing on stilts elicits mixed emotions. We can imagine the exuberance from being elevated above others while maintaining our balance with the fear of falling. Stilts symbolises our endeavours; despite the risk of falling and the greater the impact of a fall the higher we climb, we still muster the courage to mount those poles in hopes of scaling greater heights.
A compilation of Wong’s observations on the human condition, Stilts reflects on the aspirations of people amidst the realities of life. The series celebrates people’s sense of hope, their tenacity in overcoming obstacles and adversity, as well as their pursuit of success and happiness.
