Known for his vibrant landscape paintings in bold gestures and colour, Malaysian artist Tang Hong Lee presents new paintings in oil for his 4th solo exhibition in Singapore at Momentous Arts.
Inquiring deep into his creative process, Lee explores nature’s spirituality and its mystical power in all its splendid forms and colours in his new series titled ’Nature’s Spectacles’. Enthralled by the deep forest and primeval jungles, the life forms and exotic sounds that inhabit the natural environment – Lee’s artistic intention is to portray the rigor and energy of the transformation that takes place in nature and brings that fleeting moment into our view. Our curiosity is piqued as we revel in the mystery and spiritual potency of nature through the artist dramatic verve and imagination.
His richly gestural technique and judicious subject matter lends an immediacy that engages the viewer on an emotional level that are both introspective and spiritual. Lee’s new series marks a shift in mood and a return to abstraction which dominates his artistic practice from 1999 to 2004, it’s focus on composition and technique. The evocations Lee brings tohis paintings has a surreal effect and brings to mind the masterpiece Tiger In A Tropical Stormby French painter Henri Rousseau who is admired for his technique and disconcerted composition.
In a three decade long career, Lee has explored various facets of the landscapes, from representational to the abstract. As a colourist, Lee enjoys exploring colour in all its nuances, embracing both it’s emotional and expressive qualities. Composition and colour has been the hallmark of Lee’s paintings since his early paintings of anchovies with political undertones back in 1998. Lee taught fine arts at the Kuala Lumpur College of Arts for two decades before turning to full time painting. He currently lives and works in Malaysia.
