We all consume fashion. Be it apparel, accessories or shoes. We all play a part in this industry. We must take responsibility. The fashion textile industry has given rise to garments with high costs, enviromentally and socially. The emergence of fast-paced production, from catwalk to consumers has enabled cheap under-market value clothing to be sold worldwide. Clothes are art, designed with thought and manufactured skillfully and care but the rise in demand for fast fashion has made clothing disposable. One-time use, to be thrown away takes away from this labour of love. We are seeing mountains of landfills, polluted waterways and unjust treatment to our garment workers. Fashion is hurting our home. We have the power to change that. The earth and its people are in our hands. We are socially progressive and enviromentally aware yet also rapacious consumers of fashion, one of the world’s most polluting industries. With this installation, we want to evoke the feeling that the Earth is quite literally in our hands. Feel the weight of our earth being overwhelmed with overconsumption. Feel these discarded garments and fabrics representing all the items we are disposing of and overwhelming our home with. Feel it in your hands.
