An exhibition featuring Bui Huu Hung & Ta Thi Thanh Tam.
Bui Huu Hung rejuvenates the ancient art of Lacquer painting with a distinctively original
approach. His paintings are grand in setting but intimate in likeness.
Bui Huu Hung’s central theme is regal women, adorned in richly decorated colourful gowns with their eyes set forward, as if sizing up and contemplating. Their expressions are delicate and reveal a range of emotions, from confidence to introspection. His figures exist in an illusory space, unanchored by earth and sky.
In search of inner serenity, Ta Thi Thanh Tam turns to her childhood memories for inspiration. Adopting a fairly minimalist style, her lacquer paintings see the subject placed on a two-dimensional background, rendered with bold lines and solid hues. The simplicity of her painting style reflects the clarity of the artist’s mind while expressing complex stories of her childhood. No matter the subject, be it monks, rural children or buffalo herders, viewers will feel the warmth of the peaceful countryside and the genuine emotions of the villagers.
