Set in the early 20th century, the play depicts the harsh lives of gamblers, prostitutes, petty thieves, and drunk layabouts towards the end of Czarist Russia. In plots and sub-plots, the play dwells on the theme of the harsh truth versus a comforting lie as the down-trodden characters deceive themselves about the bleakness of their lives.
