Yugoslav-born artist, Milica Bravacic-Milla will be painting ‘live’ in the lobby of The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore from 15 June to 24 June 2015, 2.30pm to 5.30pm daily.
Milica’s ‘live’ showcase is part of the hotel’s ongoing transformation themed “Refreshing Our Palette”, inspired by the homonyms “palette” and ‘palate”, which reference an artist’s palette and our taste palate respectively.
The second piece in “The Metamorphic Journey” art series, Milica will paint Peranakan motifs onto tiles and stamp them onto a foldable art panel to create a larger, more complex composition. Titled “Jendala”, the Malay word for window, a wooden shutter window takes centerpiece in this longitudinally-aligned and scattered stack of Peranakan tile motifs that Milica has collected from the streets of Singapore and the Bukit Brown cemetery. Exclusively crafted for the hotel’s “Refreshing Our Palette” art transformation project, Milica’s composition will showcase a summary of over 60 different tile ornaments spanning the early 19th to 20th century, some of which still adorn heritage shop houses in the city.
During her ‘live’ show dates, visitors will have the opportunity to interact with Milica and print the ornaments of their choice on rice paper which can be taken away as a memento, and to possibly have their designs incorporated into Milica’s art piece. This art installation references Peranakan food, one of the colonial cuisines that will be showcased at the new all-day dining restaurant when it reopens in late August.
Milica graduated from the Belgrade University of the Arts with a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting. Her artistic signature remains within the realm of architectural details that can be translated into other aesthetic and cultural meanings, when extracted from their original context. She moved to Singapore in 1998 where she began a new series of works relating to the symbolism of Peranakan tiles after being exposed to the nation’s melting pot of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
