The Samsui Women of Chinatown

Hard at Work (1988) Chinese Ink & Colour on Rice Paper 77x110 cm

The Samsui Women, (‘Hong Tou Jin’ ) migrated to Singapore from China in the 1930’s as labourers & construction workers. They lived around Chinatown and supported their families back in China. This exhibition by Second Generation artist, Tong Chin Sye, tells a story of the lives, work and legacy of these migrant workers who contributed to the early development of Singapore. As Singapore underwent urbanization between the 1970’s to the 1990’s, the Samsui women became a vanishing breed.
