The Singapore Modern Art Narrative showcases 50 artworks that span over half a century, by some of Singapore’s finest and most important artists. Featuring varying styles and mediums, the visual feast includes works by Cheong Soo Pieng, Lim Tze Peng, Ong Kim Seng, Tan Choh Tee, Wong Keen, Ang Ah Tee, Yeo Hoe Koon and other local heavyweights.
The early Singapore art scene (1930s – 1950s) was anchored on one hand, by the British education system, and on the other, by schools and societies established by Chinese settlers that included artists and scholars. Reigned dominant was the Nanyang art style which advocated for an amalgam of East-West Modern aesthetics localized by a distinct Southeast Asian socio-cultural experience. This exhibition illuminates for the audience the distinct veins and genres that shaped the Singapore modern art scene; and how succeeding generations of art practitioners continue to straddle between the different influences and modes of artistic practice. The show is accompanied by a colour-illustrated publication that highlights the narrative and selected artworks.
