Urban : Backyard 《都市 : 後院》

Lim Jia Qi, A Tree, a Roof and a Pond, 2021, 90 x 120 x 2.5cm, Acrylic Paint and Carving Wood Panel

Urban : Backyard 《都市 : 後院》is a solo exhibition by Singapore contemporary emerging artist, Lim Jia Qi.

Urban : Backyard, as its name suggests, is a survey of nature in the urban landscape. As urban living and nature get more and more intertwined, the line between urban living and nature gets blurred. In fact, they are so interweaved that sometimes, we conveniently forget about them or even take them for granted – the intentionally scattered trees dotting our neighbourhood, the freshly pruned shrubbery along our pathways, and the creepers and ferns that have found a home on our HDB walls. Through painting on carved wood panels, Jia Qi hopes to shine a light on the mini garden in every corner of our neighbourhood.

Drawing inspiration from Singapore’s public housing estates, Lim’s Urban : Backyard is a captivating play on space and perception.

Lim Jia Qi (b. 1997, Singapore) graduated with a degree in fine arts from LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore in 2019. Her works investigate spaces that exist within the urban environment and how these spaces can be reconstructed to express their inherent poetic-ness.

Jia Qi was awarded the Ngee Ann Kongsi Scholarship (AY 17/18) and the LASALLE Award for Academic Excellence in 2017. She is the youngest winner of Singapore’s Young Talent Programme to date (AY 18/19). The promising artist has also participated in various group exhibitions in Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia since 2016.
