Gabby Malpas - Colourblind 3 (2018) watercolour, pen and gouache on canvas 95cm x 64cm
International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed for over a century since 1911 to call attention to women’s rights, and now to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Today, it is commemorated on March 8th, and has expanded into Women’s History Month during March in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.
In Singapore, men have long dominated the art scene, but even amongst the pioneers, we could celebrate the accomplishments of Georgette Chen, with more and more women joining her ranks until perhaps near-gender parity has been achieved today. Utterly Art is proud that within a day of its conception, we were easily able to assemble a group of 10 female artists for our first Women’s Day exhibition from those who had worked with us in this past year. These range from Anna Lu, a Second Generation Artist who was part of the Ten Men Art Group, to QQ Lee who only started exhibiting four years ago. Here then, in all their glorious talent and diversity, our artists show how they are Utterly Women in spirit.
