Resident artist Ella Mendoza at T U Collab
Singapore’s newest art space is dedicated to the creation and exhibition of contemporary ceramics. Housing a fully equipped ceramics studio and gallery space, T U Collab will provide opportunities for local and international artists to develop their practice through a curated program of residencies and exhibitions.
With the first resident artists already working in the space, T U Collab will officially open on Saturday 24 November with its inaugural exhibition, Variables of the Function.
T U Collab is the latest initiative of Singaporean ceramic artist Alvin Tan Teck Heng. A prolific traveller, Teck Heng has spent the last few years working between studios in Singapore and the Philippines and participating in conferences and exhibitions throughout Asia and Europe. It is these experiences that led him to establish T U Collab, as he states,
“Travelling has enabled me to see first-hand the incredible diversity of contemporary ceramics throughout the world, while also reinforcing the strength of what is happening in Southeast Asia. T U Collab is about bringing these experiences together by connecting local and international artists and audiences.”
Teck Heng sees T U Collab as a creative space to explore the infinite possibilities of contemporary ceramics, so the discipline-specific focus is anything but restrictive. The residency and exhibition program will invite artists who engage with clay in many different ways, from those grounded in studio pottery to those who incorporate clay within interdisciplinary practices – and everything in between.
T U Collab’s inaugural exhibition Variables of the Function will explore and challenge the concept of function as it relates to ceramics. Curated by Boxplot, Variables of the Function brings together a group of emerging artists from Singapore and the Philippines whose works expand and challenge concepts of function beyond the utilitarian – or reject the framework altogether. In the month leading up to the opening, the artists developed works for the exhibition through residencies with Boxplot and T U Collab, in Australia and Singapore respectively.
