“We Shape the World that Shapes Us” is a landmark exhibition featuring 14 exceptional artworks by 11 eminent first and second-generation Nanyang artists. The artists represented include pioneers Cheong Soo Pieng and Liu Kang, Cultural Medallion recipients Ong Kim Seng and Tan Choh Tee, as well as the late Lim Mu Hue, whose painting was featured in the main exhibition of this year’s Venice Biennale. The show, which celebrates the relationship between Man and Nature, is on from 15 June to 14 July 2024 at our gallery, located at 2 Havelock Road, #02-29 Havelock 2, Singapore 059763.
Highlights of our exhibition include one of the largest early known ink paintings by Cheong Soo Pieng. Titled Returning Home, the monumental ink work completed in 1952, the same year as the historic Bali trip made by our art pioneers, depicts a group of fishermen, whose livelihoods depend on the sea, with their boats along the shore.
The second highlight is also by Cheong. A late ink work completed in 1981, Alishan Ladies illustrates two ladies from the Tsou, an indigenous people of central southern Taiwan. Inspired by the Tsou’s love for nature, Cheong also paid special attention to the materials used to create Alishan Ladies; the artist painted on bamboo paper, which was later mounted on a sheet of jute attached to two rods of cane, emulating the Chinese scroll.
Pioneer artist Liu Kang is represented by Grandeur of Guilin, a 1979 oil painting inspired by the beautiful and majestic Guilin in China. A unique feature of the painting is the original bamboo frame selected by the late artist, which is a perfect match for the subject of the painting as well as the theme of this exhibition.
