How do we see ourselves?
With every showcase, we start with a story. This time by Wendy Mack, @thecuriousforager. More than just an artist, she bares her experiences to bring a printmaking showcase unearthing inner fragmentation and integration through nature.
This showcase is a physical extension of The Curious Forager: A Study of Weeds; a little book of hand-pressed prints that was conceived during a period where the artist began to look inward for answers as she was struggling to make sense of the complexity shrouding her external world. This primed her sensitivities to the subtle, intricate order of nature. As she stepped into the overgrown plot enveloped by creepers and visiting moths, she caught herself deliberating over removing the group of wildflowers and berries that flourished in its then current state. This incident triggered an inquiry into the classification and definition of weeds, where many were harvested and regrown in individual containers to observe their propagative behaviours. After which, these plants were sampled, pressed and printed into a series of experimental monochromatic monotypes. Eventually these prints from nature – paired with her illustrations – became essential documents that enabled her to process, one fragment at a time, all the little moments that unveiled her true nature.
As this showcase is an extension of her book, meet the author sessions will be available for booking through DM.
