This lecture by Associate Professor Ong Chang Woei will examine Singapore’s Chinese pop culture landscape in the 1980s through the development of Singapore campus ballads (xinyao). Ong will depict the complex relationship between xinyao and Taiwan-centered East Asian Chinese pop music networks, and show how these contributed to the marginalization of xinyao in the early 1990s.
