Platform Projects Singapore and National Parks Board (NParks) announced the donation by BW Group of a public sculpture commission by internationally acclaimed American artist James Surls in honour of Singapore’s 50th anniversary.

The three meter high bronze and stainless steel outdoor sculpture draws its artistic inspiration from the Dipterocarp seed. The sculpture, titled Fifty Wings, will be installed at the Singapore Botanic Gardens opposite the National Orchid Garden and next to the Giant Cola heritage tree. This public art commission is the result of the close collaboration between Platform Projects Singapore, NParks and BW Group.

The sculpture will be installed in time for SG50 celebrations in August 2015, with the formal unveiling to be scheduled soon thereafter.

“We are grateful to donors like BW for having the vision to support sculpture commissions in Singapore’s public spaces”

says Shareen Khattar, co-founder of Platform Projects Singapore. This is the second public sculpture commission under Platform Commissions’ ongoing program of developing public art in Singapore through exciting partnerships between international and local artists, institutions, patrons and corporations.
