“Art teaches me to observe, appreciate, quietly patient, and respect my precious time.”
– Jayson Cortez
Portal explores the innocence, ephemerality, and world of make-believe that only childhood can offer. Inspired by his younger sister, Cortez captures the essence of childhood through his fantastical compositions by utilising an unconventional technique in which he layers one existing painting over another. The exhibit is a departure from the artist’s older, more austere works yet his hyperrealist tendencies remain apparent and are flawlessly intertwined with surrealist elements. This unique interweaving of styles is palpable in Time Travel, a respectful homage to pioneer surrealist Salvador Dali. Portal is a unique, emotional exploration about the potency of a child’s mind and its powers to unlock infinite realities.
